With this list of the most innovative and promising new companies in the Northeastern United Sates, AlwaysOn’s editors and our panel of industry experts introduce a new generation of game-changing players in the Northeast's high-growth marketplace.

These 100 companies have emerged at an important time for the US economy.  As financial services and real estate markets gasp for air, investors are turning to technology to expand into global markets, make business more efficient, and find new ways to tap hidden revenue sources.  And that means more money flowing into the robust VC and startup community in the Northeast.

This inaugural list features companies across all high-growth sectors, including green tech, mobile and wireless, enterprise, media, infrastructure and more. Many of the top companies -- like overall winner Boston-Power, can potentially impact all sectors of the economy by drastically changing the way energy is stored and used.

For the Northeast 100 list, hundreds of private companies, spanning numerous sectors and all stages of corporate development, were nominated. To make the final selection of companies that excel in AlwaysOn’s five primary evaluation criteria—innovation, market potential, commercialization, stakeholder value creation, and media attention or “buzz”—the panel drew on industry expertise from KPMG; Bridge Bank; Citibank; Revolution Partners; Square 1 Bank; Morse, Barnes-Brown & Pendleton; Needham & Co., Cooley Godward Kronish, and AlwaysOn editors.
